How to choose an essential oil?
The purity of an OE means that it has not been contaminated or filled with additional ingredients. Pure OEs are cold-pressed or created by steam distillation. The potency of OEs refers to their correct chemical composition. In other words, a good-quality OE has the ideal chemical profile associated with the plant and can therefore produce the desired health effects.
The chemical composition of a given plant depends on where it was grown, climate, altitude, soil composition and cultivation techniques. For example, there are about 40 species of lavender in the world, but the best properties are found in the narrow-leafed variety from the Mediterranean. Make sure the OEs you use are scientifically pure and effective. Don't take the manufacturers' word for it. Reliable companies make available the results of tests they have conducted on the products they offer OEs.
OEs are so complex in composition that they are easy to counterfeit, as adulteration can only be detected with sophisticated laboratory equipment. Unethical manufacturers add synthetic agents to OEs to produce lower-quality OEs at a lower cost. E.g., they replace citric OE with synthetic citral or limonene. Ask the manufacturer for gas chromatography or mass spectrometry. The bottles should be of dark glass, on them the Latin name of the plant, information that it is pure OE, aromatic use, external or for consumption, expiration date, storage method, production batch designation, manufacturer. If you have doubts, contact experienced aromatherapist. In the next article 3 methods of using essential oils.
