Alicante has decided to delay the lighting of its Christmas decorations until Friday, November 29, instead of the originally planned date, as a gesture of support and respect for the victims of the recent flooding (dana) affecting Valencia. The decision was made jointly by the City Council and merchants' associations, who showed solidarity and understanding toward the situation.
Unanimity and empathy in decision-making
Cristina Cutanda, government spokeswoman, and Lidia López, councilor for the City of Alicante. The Trade Council thanked traders for their unanimous support of the date change. Cutanda stressed the empathy shown by the traders and explained that the goal is to balance the mourning situation with the need to boost trade during key periods such as Black Friday and Christmas.
City's commitment to help victims
Lidia López pointed out that traders were able to put solidarity first, showing generosity toward their economic interests, which they also demonstrated when they canceled Halloween activities due to the weather disaster. Infrastructure Councilor Cristina García, stressed that Alicante will remember the tragedy in Valencia this year, showing support for those affected.
Decorations and lighting hours
This year, 120 streets in Alicante will be lit up, decorated with arches, garlands and lights on trees and lampposts. Two special panels - a large bauble and a bell - will be available for traditional photos, and an 18-meter Christmas tree will return to Constitución Avenue. Energy-efficient LED lights will be used for the decoration, and the lighting will be on from 6pm to 1am, with an extension to 4:30am in the Christmas Eve, New Year's Eve and Epiphany.
