Christmas for Poles living abroad is a time when they feel especially strongly the need to cultivate traditions and ties with their homeland. In many countries where the Polish community lives, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day become a unique opportunity to meet together, cultivate customs and pass on traditions to younger generations.
An example of such a community is the Polish community in the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and increasingly in Spain. A growing group of Poles living in this country are also happy to cultivate Polish Christmas traditions. Polish stores offer Christmas products, and local restaurants run by Poles make it possible to order traditional Christmas Eve dishes.
Last year, there were several unique initiatives on the Costa Blanca, including one organized with the support of the Consulate General of the Republic of Poland in Barcelona. A joint Christmas Eve dinner allowed participants to celebrate in a traditional atmosphere. Poles broke the wafer, sang carols, and the Christmas Eve table bowed under the weight of traditional dishes. The atmosphere was warm and family-like, and the shared moments reinforced the sense of belonging.
This year, too, a number of Christmas gatherings are planned, allowing Polish families to reunite and celebrate the Christmas traditions that are most important to them, even far from their homeland. This is a beautiful testament to the strength of our bond with our culture and traditions, which accompany us no matter where we live.
