Galgo español - the pride of Spanish hunting
Spanish greyhounds have been present in the Iberian Peninsula since ancient times. Their slender stature and long legs make them excellent hunters, especially during the traditional rabbit hunts known as "caza con galgo." They used to be a symbol of social status and an adornment of royal courts, and today are still used for sport and hunting.
Between tradition and cruelty
Although the galgo español is a prized hunting dog, its fate is often tragic. Every year, after the hunting season ends, thousands of greyhounds are abandoned or subjected to brutality because their owners do not want to bear the cost of keeping them. This is one of the most serious animal welfare problems in Spain.
Adoption as an opportunity for a better life
Fortunately, many organizations, both in Spain and around the world, are committed to rescuing greyhounds. Foundations such as Galgos del Sol and Fundación Benjamín Mehnert run shelters and adoption campaigns, enabling these animals to have a new life with their families. Galgo español adoption is becoming increasingly popular, including in other European countries.
