Orihuela's historic center returns to the Middle Ages: Opening of the XXVI Medieval Fair
**Orihuela inaugurated this Friday the XXVI Medieval Fair (Mercado Medieval), one of the most symbolic events in the city's holiday calendar. Throughout the weekend, the historic center of the village is transformed into a huge scene straight out of the age of knights and kings
The grand opening was attended by key representatives of local authorities and associations, including the mayor of Orihuela, Pepe Vegara, and the councilor for ceremonies, Rocío Ortuño. Key figures for local tradition were also present: Armengola 2025 (Ana Belén Navarro), the president of the Moorish-Christian Festivities Association (Enrique Riquelme Terrés) and this year's ambassadors. A special guest was Miguel Ángel Varela Pinedo, president of the Mexican city of Zacatecas, which underscored the cultural ties linking the two partner cities.
Official proclamation from City Hall balcony
The highlight of the inauguration was the official announcement of the opening of the fair from the balcony of City Hall. Councilwoman Rocío Ortuño gave a solemn speech, using archaic, ceremonial language. In it, she referred to the historical roots of the event and the fair privilege granted to the city in 1272 by King Alfonso X the Wise.
From the city balcony, Ortuño invited residents and tourists to walk the streets of the old town, stressing the importance of Orihuela's heritage and the idea of the coexistence of three cultures (Christian, Jewish and Muslim), which is the foundation of this fair.
Fair with history and flair
The Medieval Fair in Orihuela is now one of the most important events of its kind in the Valencia region. For three days, the city's streets and squares are filled with a rich program encompassing tradition, culture and entertainment. The event is divided into thematic zones:
- Plaza de Santiago: Workshops, stories and dances relating to mythology and the "three cultures."
- Plaza del Carmen: Circus shows, magic, humor and oriental dancing.
- Calle Hospital: A family zone with an animal enclosure, camels and a falconry exhibit.
- Explanada de Santo Domingo: Spectacular knightly tournaments and an Arab camp at the Arco de Santo Domingo.
- Plaza del Salvador and Santa Lucía: Children's attractions, puppet theaters and games.
Practical information
To facilitate access to the historic center, the City Council has prepared special parking zones. Visitors can leave their cars at the Álvarez de la Riva health center, on the road to Beniel, and on the road to Hurchillo, among others, from where the fair grounds are easily accessible.
Once again, Orihuela proves that it can travel back in time, offering a unique history lesson and excellent entertainment for thousands of visitors.
