Spanish whiskeys and gins
Spain, known for its wine, sherry and brandy, has been steadily expanding its offerings over the past few years to also include whiskeys and gins, which are gaining international recognition. Although whiskeys and gins from the Iberian Peninsula differ from traditional Scotch or Irish ones, they offer unique flavor profiles that attract connoisseurs seeking new experiences in the world of spirits.
Whisky straight from Spain
In recent years, Spanish distilleries have invested in whisky development, experimenting with aging processes as well as barrel types to produce uncommon flavors. Leading brands, such as DYC from Segovia and Destilerías Liber from Granada, offer products distinguished by local climate and raw materials. One example is DYC 8, a single malt whisky aged for eight years, whose character is enhanced by notes of vanilla and spice, thanks to a unique aging process in sherry casks. Thanks to such a technique, the Spanish whisky gains deep aromas, which are appreciated by liquor lovers.
Another interesting player in the market is Navarro Hermanos, a distillery with tradition, which produces Embrujo de Granada whisky. Aged in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains, this single malt whisky is characterized by notes of dried fruit, honey and malty body, which sets it apart from its Scottish counterparts.
Spanish gin: Mediterranean freshness
Gins from Spain draw fully on a wealth of local botanical ingredients, including herbs, citrus, and unique flowers. Gin Mare is an iconic Spanish gin, distilled with Mediterranean ingredients such as olives, rosemary, thyme and basil. It is created at a distillery near Barcelona and is considered the perfect gin for refreshing summer cocktails.
Another well-known brand is Nordés, produced in Galicia. This gin is unique for its composition, which is based on albariño white wine distillate. Its flavor is enriched by juniper, bay leaf, lemon verbena and eucalyptus, among others, making it one of the most distinctive gins in Spain.
