The end of Historic Isolation? TRAMway megaproject that promises to connect Torrevieja to the airport
Torrevieja, the demographic pearl of the Vega Baja region, is facing a monumental paradox: a population that has quadrupled over the past two decades, exceeding 100,000 residents, is still trapped in the transportation network of the last century. But a new ray of hope - and intense political debate - has emerged in the southern Costa Blanca: **the possible arrival of the TRAM line, which would directly connect Torrevieja to Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández airport
25 Years of Broken Promises: The Struggle to Get Out of the "Funnel"
To understand the scale of this project, one must look at the dark history of the region's infrastructure. For more than a quarter century, residents have witnessed a parade of ghost projects:
- Highway Spectrum (2006): Budgeted as a final solution and then canceled by the courts.
- Eternal Road N-332 (2009): The project to expand the road passing through Torrevieja stalled for 16 years. Today it is still a conventional road that mercilessly jams during the high season.
- Illusion CV-95 (2022): Announced with an investment of 30 million euros, which is gone.
- High Speed Rail: A Pharaonic project of more than €1.2 billion, with a multi-million dollar study commissioned in 2014, that never saw the light of day.
Faced with this scenario of isolation, recent proposals, such as the one submitted by the Vox municipal group in February 2025, loudly call for a regional consortium. The premise is clear: no municipality can finance its salvage alone. The Generalitat (Valencia's regional government) and the Diputación (provincial government) must intervene.
Essential Plan: 200 Million for Vega Baja Awakening
Faced with an unrealistic 1.2 billion for traditional rail, a much more realistic and cheaper alternative is now shining on the table: the TRAM network valued at around 200 million euros, according to a recent study by the University of Alicante.
What would be the dream route?
Although the exact route still hangs in the air, transportation experts point to a logical and crucial corridor:
torrevieja -> Vega Baja municipality -> Elche -> Alicante airport -> Alicante city center
El Altet Airport would become a major interchange for this network. It is worth noting that the public company FGV (Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat Valenciana) has already included in its plans for 2023 a tender for feasibility studies of an Orihuela-Torrevieja and Airport-Torrevieja connection via streetcar.
Why is it a Question of Survival for Torrevieja?
The huge interest in this project is not a whim. It responds to an urgent demographic and economic need:
- Giant international community: Torrevieja is home to one of Spain's largest communities of residents from the UK, Scandinavia, Germany and Eastern Europe. For them, the airport is not a luxury, it is an umbilical cord connecting them to their homeland.
- Weak Current Alternatives: Without a private car, getting to the airport means having to rely on shuttle buses, private transfers or expensive cabs.
- Environmental and road breakdown: A modern TRAM would not only drastically reduce traffic on the AP-7 highway and N-332 road, but also lower the carbon footprint in an area struggling with tourism oversaturation.
Hidden Influence: the Real Estate "Boom" in Embryo?
If the excavators finally start working, the real estate market will be the first to feel the shock wave. The history of infrastructure in Spain teaches us that connectivity increases the value of investments.
- Growth in demand: International buyers who are currently rejecting the southern Costa Blanca because of the lack of high-speed rail could change their minds.
- Rental Value Increase: The ease of getting to and from the airport by public transportation would make vacation and long-term rental properties much more attractive.
Clash with Reality: Don't Pack Your Suitcase Yet
It's easy to get carried away by the enthusiasm of the headlines, but the facts call for caution. As a data-driven artificial intelligence model, I must emphasize the current reality of the project:
- This is just research: The TRAM in Elche, which would be the initial core of the network, is still in the route analysis phase.
- Distant timelines: The most optimistic timelines indicate that the first operational phase at Elche would not see the light of day until 2027 Any expansion toward Torrevieja would require many more years.
- No budget: There is currently no allocated budget or final approved route to reach Torrevieja. The project remains a "long-term vision."
The arrival of the TRAMway in Torrevieja and its connection to the airport is a mega-project that would forever change the physiognomy, economy and quality of life in the southern Costa Blanca. After decades of neglect of the rail infrastructure, the political and civic uproar is louder than ever. But patience is needed; Spain's bureaucratic machine moves at a much slower speed than the trains it promises.
