Paco Rabanne - Visionary of Fashion and Perfume

Culture/

Paco Rabanne, or rather Francisco Rabaneda Cuervo, was born in 1934 in San SebastiĆ”n, Spain. After the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War, his family fled to France, where young Paco received an architectural education at the Ɖcole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. It was there that he began experimenting with design, which led him to the world of fashion and fragrances.

Avant-Garde Style and Futuristic Designs

Rabanne became famous as a rebel of the fashion world. His first collection, presented in 1966, was titled "12 dresses made of modern materials that cannot be worn." In it he used metal, plastic and even paper, which caused a sensation and division among critics. Rabanne wanted to revolutionize haute couture, moving away from traditional fabrics to industrial materials.

His most recognizable creation is the iconic metallic dress composed of linked rings, which was worn by 1960s stars such as Jane Birkin and FranƧoise Hardy.

Rabanne's designs have also appeared in films - he designed the costumes for the futuristic production Barbarella with Jane Fonda.

Paco Rabanne and the World of Perfume

In addition to avant-garde fashion, Rabanne enjoyed great success in the perfume industry. In 1969, he presented his first fragrance, Calandre, which marked the beginning of a legendary perfume line. The brand's best-known fragrances include 1 Million, Invictus and Lady Million, which are still extremely popular today.

Curiosity:

Controversy with Coco Chanel One of the most controversial anecdotes related to Rabanne is his conflict with Coco Chanel. In the 1960s, the two worked on handbag designs - Chanel criticized Rabanne, calling him a "blacksmith" instead of a fashion designer. Rabanne's response was the iconic metallic Le 1969 handbag, whose handle was inspired by... a cistern chain.

Today, the Paco Rabanne brand, under the leadership of Julien Dossena, continues the designer's legacy, combining futuristic aesthetics with modern streetwear. Rabanne died in 2023, but his influence on fashion and perfume remains unforgettable.
