Duel of the Kings of the Sky: the Iberian Eagle vs. the White-tailed Eagle (Polish Eagle)

Pets/

When we look up at the sky and see the majestic silhouette of a large bird of prey, we often forget how diverse these amazing creatures can be. Today we will take a close look at two icons of European fauna that not only reign supreme in their ecosystems, but are also deeply rooted in culture and national pride.

We present a juxtaposition of: Iberian Eagle (the pride of Spain) and White-tailed eagle (the biological equivalent of the historic Polish Eagle). Which one is bigger? Which one is more dangerous? Let's find out the facts.

Iberian Eagle (Aquila adalberti) - Peninsular Hunter

The Iberian eagle is an endemic species, meaning that under natural conditions it is found almost exclusively in the Iberian Peninsula (mainly in Spain and partly in Portugal). It belongs to the family of "true eagles" (genus Aquila).

Key features:

  • Appearance: Adult individuals have very dark, black-brown plumage, which contrasts strongly with the bright, almost white neck and occiput. Their most distinctive feature is the snow-white wing leading edges (the so-called "shoulders"), which are perfectly visible in flight.
  • Sizes:
  • Wingspan: from 1.8 to 2.1 meters.
  • Weight: Females (which are larger than males) usually weigh 3 to 3.5 kg, while males weigh 2.5 to 3 kg.
  • Habitat and Hunting: Prefers Mediterranean forests, savannas (dehesas) and mountainous areas with open spaces for hunting. Its diet is based almost 70-90% on wild rabbits, although it also hunts hares, rodents and other birds (such as partridges). It always hunts over land.
  • Conservation Status: This species was on the verge of extinction in the 20th century (in the 1960s, only about 30 pairs remained). Thanks to intensive conservation programs (Natura 2000), today the population exceeds 800 pairs, although it is still classified as Vulnerable.

White-tailed Eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla) - Marine Giant of the North

The white-tailed eagle is a powerful bird that is commonly identified with the emblem of Poland (the White Eagle). As an interesting fact, it is worth mentioning that from the point of view of ornithology, the white-tailed eagle is not a "true eagle," but belongs to the subfamily of hawks (known as eagles/eagles), which are closely related to vultures and live near water.

Key features:

  • Appearance: Attention is drawn to the massive, almost "rectangular" silhouette in flight. Adult individuals have uniformly brown plumage, a light (sometimes grayish) head and neck, and a distinctive, relatively short, snow-white tail (wedge-shaped). They also have a powerful, hook-like, intensely yellow beak, which is much larger than that of proper eagles.
  • Sizes:
  • Wingspan: from 2.0 to as much as 2.45 meters (it is one of the birds with the largest wingspan in Europe).
  • Weight: Females can weigh from 5 to as much as 7 kg, and males from 4 to 5.5 kg.
  • Habitat and hunting: Closely associated with aquatic environments. It inhabits sea coasts, large lakes, river valleys and old-growth forests near them. Its diet is mainly fish (which it grabs just below the surface of the water) and water birds (e.g. ducks, grebes). In winter it often acts as nature's sanitizer, feeding on carrion.
  • Protection Status: Although it has suffered from the use of the pesticide DDT in the past, its population in Europe (including Poland) is now very stable and growing. The species has a Least Concern status.

Direct Clash: What do the numbers and facts say?

To help you choose your favorite, we've prepared a brief summary of the differences between the two species:

Both birds are absolute masters of survival in their environments. The Iberian eagle is an agile, aerial land hunter with elegant coloration, while the bald eagle is a true marine titan, towering over its surroundings with its brute strength and size.
