Christmas Tradition Caga Ti贸 - Magic Log from Catalonia

Culture/December 03, 2025

Ti贸 de Nadal, also known as Caga Ti贸, is a deeply rooted tradition in Catalonia and Aragon, combining rural, pre-Christian and Christmas elements. The custom, especially popular in Catalonia, combines symbolism, magic and fun, bringing joy to entire families, especially children.

Origin and meaning

Ti贸 de Nadal originated from the ancient celebration of the winter solstice. Originally, the trunk symbolized fire, which provided warmth and light during the cold months. In the past, after Christmas, the trunk was burned and its ashes were scattered over the fields as a symbol of fertility and a tribute to the ancestors.

Over time, the practice has evolved into a children's celebration that retains its symbolic character. Decorated with a smiling face, a traditional Catalan hat (barretina) and covered with a blanket, the Ti贸 becomes a magical figure who “dispenses” gifts and sweets as children hit him with sticks in a ritual full of joy and traditional songs.

Preparation and ritual

The tradition begins in early December, when Ti贸 arrives home, usually at the beginning of Advent or on the day of the Immaculate Conception (December 8).

During this period, children feed Ti贸 fruit, orange peels and sweets, and cover him with a blanket to “keep him from freezing.”

It culminates on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day, when children sing carols, including the traditional “Caga Ti贸, ametlles i torr贸!” (“Ti贸, yield almonds and nougat!”), while hitting the trunk with sticks. Parents secretly put small gifts and sweets under the blanket, creating the illusion that it is Ti贸 who is “giving them out.”

Unique character

Ti贸 de Nadal usually provides small gifts such as candy, simple toys or nougats, while larger gifts are traditionally reserved for Epiphany (January 6). This sets this tradition apart from other holiday customs, giving it a uniquely familial and local feel.

Symbolism and modernity

Ti贸 de Nadal symbolizes gratitude to nature and the importance of family ties. Although the roots of this tradition are rural and pagan, today it is a widely recognized symbol of the holidays in Catalonia. Huge versions of the Ti贸 can be found in public squares, and schools and museums organize a variety of activities with it.

The Ti贸 de Nadal tradition is a perfect example of how ancient customs can adapt to modern times while retaining their essence. This charming character brings joy into homes and strengthens family ties, being a key part of holiday celebrations in Catalonia and Aragon.
