Mineral Extraction in Spain
Spain has a long history of mining, dating back to ancient times when the Romans exploited its rich deposits of precious and semi-precious metals. Today, the country remains a major producer of certain mineral resources, although the extraction of some metals, such as gold and silver, has significantly declined or ceased entirely.
Gold in Spain: The End of Large-Scale Mining
Spain was once one of the key centers of gold mining, particularly during the Roman era. The most famous deposits were located in Las Médulas in the Castile and León region. It was one of the largest open-pit gold mines in the ancient world, where the Romans employed the “ruina montium” technique, which involved using water to break up the rock.
Currently, gold mining in Spain is negligible. Although geological surveys are being conducted to locate new deposits, no mine is operating on an industrial scale. Exploration companies continue to search for potential mining sites, but the country is not among the leading producers of this metal.
Silver: History and the Present Day
Spain had a rich tradition of silver mining, and one of the most important sites was the mine in Bustarviejo, located in the Sierra de Guadarrama. For centuries, silver was an important mineral mined in Spain, but as with gold, mining has almost completely ceased.
Currently, silver is not mined in Spain as a primary raw material, but it can be obtained as a byproduct of the extraction of other metals, such as copper or zinc. Spain is not among the leading silver-producing countries; the main deposits of the metal are currently located in South America, China, and Poland.
Current Mineral Production in Spain
Although gold and silver mining has ceased, Spain remains a major producer of other minerals, such as:
- Copper – The province of Andalusia, particularly the Iberian Pyrite Belt, is known for its rich deposits of this metal.
- Zinc and lead – mined in the regions of Cantabria and Galicia.
- Tungsten – Spain is one of Europe’s leading producers of this strategic raw material.
