Bilbao – The Pearl of the Basque Country

Bilbao – The Pearl of the Basque Country

Travels/

Bilbao, located in the heart of the Basque Country in northern Spain, is a city that has undergone a remarkable transformation in recent decades. Once associated mainly with heavy industry, today it is a dynamic center of culture, architecture, and gastronomy, attracting tourists from all over the world.

A City Reborn

As recently as the end of the 20th century, Bilbao was a typical industrial city, dominated by steel mills and port cranes. However, thanks to ambitious revitalization projects, the city has gained a new identity. An example of this transformation is the famous Guggenheim Museum—a futuristic building designed by Frank Gehry that has become a symbol of modern Bilbao. It was the museum’s opening in 1997 that kicked off the city’s urban and economic renewal.

Architecture and Art at the Highest Level

Bilbao is a true paradise for architecture lovers. In addition to the Guggenheim Museum, other must-see attractions include the Iberdrola Tower, the Zubizuri Bridge designed by Santiago Calatrava, and the futuristic metro station designed by Norman Foster. Among the city’s historic sites is the picturesque Casco Viejo—the old town with its narrow streets and traditional Basque bars.

The Capital of Basque Cuisine

You can’t talk about Bilbao without mentioning its exceptional cuisine. The city is famous for its pintxos—small appetizers served on slices of bread—which can be found in almost every local tavern. Be sure to visit La Ribera Market, where you can sample fresh seafood and local specialties. For more discerning foodies, Bilbao also offers Michelin-starred restaurants such as Azurmendi and Nerua.

Modernity in Harmony with Tradition

Bilbao proves that innovation and tradition can go hand in hand. Despite impressive changes, the city has retained its unique Basque character. Local festivals, such as Aste Nagusia, attract crowds of tourists with their colorful parades and outdoor concerts.

Thanks to its blend of modern architecture, rich culture, and exquisite cuisine, Bilbao has become one of the most interesting places to visit in Spain. It’s a city worth seeing for yourself and experiencing its unique atmosphere.

April in Bilbao is a great time to explore, as temperatures are mild (around 15–20°C) and the city is starting to turn green. You can stroll along the Nervión River, visit the Guggenheim Museum, or head to the nearby beaches and cliffs in the Getxo or San Juan de Gaztelugatxe areas.
