“For yoga, age does not exist”. “Yoga is for everyone. To improve the health and functioning of the body, to develop an innocent mind, a clear intelligence and the desire to lead a satisfying life, (also) a spiritually satisfying life”.
B.K.S. Iyengar
Already these short quotes from one of the masters of yoga almost exhaust the answer to the title question. You can come to a yoga class for any reason, for everyone it will be something different (back pain, backache, headache, poor sleep, overweight, nervousness, stress, sedentary work style, stiffness in the body, compacted muscles after workouts or cycling, weak immunity, menopause, osteoporosis, loneliness, a desire to learn how to meditate or breathe correctly or an observation that yoga is on the upswing or even a New Year's resolution to finally start taking care of ourselves in a healthy and comprehensive way) - and most importantly, any reason is a good one, even a perfect one!!!
And what's most beautiful is that over time we begin to see not only improvement in the issue that prompted us to start practicing, but we notice improvement in many other aspects of our lives, even where we didn't even think change was needed or possible, and it happens almost on its own.
“On its own”, of course nothing is done, so yoga, like any activity, requires regularity and discipline - and only then can you experience results. Yoga teaches us this self-discipline, which, generally disliked because it is difficult, is in fact our freedom and fulfillment of desires (to be healthy, fit, beautiful, peaceful, balanced, free from pain, poor relationships, etc.). It also teaches us humility, not everything comes at once, easily, effortlessly. It also teaches us to enjoy the process in learning about new positions, learning about our abilities, potentials, always much greater than we think - and this is already a great reason for satisfaction, joy!
Because yoga is work, but also a lot of joy, especially when we overcome difficulties together, support and cheer each other on, not imposing comfortable expectations, but practicing with dedication.
It also gives, through conscious, unhurried work on positions and attentiveness during meditation or breathing exercises a lot of peace, tranquility, so it teaches concentration, self-confidence, self-acceptance and understanding, allows you to significantly reduce stress, anxiety.
It is worth knowing that each asana, or yoga position, has its own specific effect, both on the physical level, as well as mental and emotional. So invaluable physical effects, such as, among others: improvement in the functioning of all systems in the body, as the body strengthens and cleanses itself (circulatory, respiratory, digestive...), hormonal balance, greater strength, fitness, a healthy spine, a general increase in vitality, improved immunity, a slender body, prevention and prevention of many ailments - are inextricably linked with emotional, mental.
A sense of contentment and even happiness appears, we want more and we communicate better with ourselves and the environment. Just another translation of the word yoga is unity, union, connection. Practicing yoga regularly, we make all aspects of our life develop harmoniously, through physical exercises (strengthening the body) we influence the state of mind, emotional state - this harmony of body, spirit and mind is the greatest gift of yoga for me.
