El Día de los Santos Inocentes: the Spanish equivalent of Prima Aprilis

Culture/December 27, 2024

El Día de los Santos Inocentes is the Spanish version of Joke Day, celebrated on December 28. Although the tradition stems from the biblical story of the slaughter of the innocents, today it is primarily a day full of fun and pranks.

In Spain, the tradition refers to the events described in the Gospel of St. Matthew, when Herod the Great, in order to secure his reign, ordered the killing of all children under the age of two in Bethlehem. However, the modern celebration of this day is very different from the tragic events of centuries ago. Today, December 28 is a time for everyone to laugh and play pranks, which take many forms.

As with Prima Aprilis, Spaniards use the day to play pranks on their families, friends and co-workers. In cities, people can be seen with paper necklaces with funny inscriptions, and the media often present fake, humorous news. It's a time when pranks are welcome and laughter takes center stage.

El Día de los Santos Inocentes reminds us of the value of joy and humor in everyday life. Although its origins are linked to tragic events, the modern celebration of the day is an opportunity to share fun and joy that brings people together in a carefree way. If you find yourself in Spain on December 28, be ready for laughter and pranks to be the order of the day!
