Mutxamel joins trend of converting commercial units into apartments: approval for five new residences
The practice of converting commercial premises into new homes has recently become increasingly common in Spanish cities. In response to the growing demand, municipal offices are increasingly willing to grant licenses to applicants who want to make the transition from commercial to residential use.
Mutxamel (Alicante) City Hall has just joined the wave, giving the green light for the conversion of two large premises. The decision was made during a meeting of the Local Government Board (JGL) held last Tuesday, January 20.
New life for the streets of La Paz
The approved licenses are for two properties located on La Paz Street, in the heart of the urban area. The authorities have agreed to the change of use, which will allow the creation of a total of five new apartments through appropriate renovation work:
- the first premises: has an area of 154 square meters. It will be converted into three separate apartments.
- the second unit: It has an area of 120 square meters. In its place, two new residential units will be built.
Growing trend in the region
This phenomenon is not limited to Mutxamel. It is a broader trend seen throughout the province, where empty storefronts are gaining a second life:
- Alcoy: By October of last year, more than 30 units converted into apartments were reported there. This trend, initially seen in the downtown and Zona Alta zones, has already spread to almost all the city's neighborhoods.
- Elche: This city has been actively repurposing units for residential use for several years.
- Petrer: The municipality closed 2024 with the result of 42 commercial units converted into permanent residences.
The decision by Mutxamel authorities is part of a strategy to revitalize urban spaces and adapt to a changing real estate market.
