A new vision for the coast: the grand modernization of Playa de los Locos in Torrevieja
Faced with contemporary urban challenges, the Spanish city of Torrevieja is preparing for one of the most significant transformations of its seaside landscape in recent years. The project to reurbanize the famous Playa de los Locos beach has entered a crucial phase of implementation following the announcement of the results of the construction tender. This ambitious initiative aims not only to aesthetically refresh the area, but more importantly to completely change the philosophy of the coastal zone, placing a premium on sustainability, accessibility and integration with nature.
Scale and budget of investments
The project includes the comprehensive reconstruction of a stretch of more than 1100 meters, stretching from the intersection of Avenida de la PurÃsima and La Sal Street to Avenida Roentgen. The total area of the intervention is an impressive 21,044.75 m². This massive engineering and landscaping project was priced through a bidding process in which 11 companies participated.
The most favorable bid was presented by Pavasal, proposing the amount of 8,592,352 euros. This amount represents a significant optimization over the original tender budget, which was more than €10 million. The expected completion time of the project is 18 months, which means that in the near future residents and tourists will be able to enjoy a space designed to the highest standards of the 21st century.
Project philosophy: a city open to the sea
The main architectural idea, developed by Valencian architect Juan Ignacio Fuster Marcos, is to "give back" the coast to pedestrians. The design focuses on several pillars:
- Full depenalization: Conversion of the traffic route into a pedestrian zone, which will allow free movement without architectural barriers.
- Renaturalization: Introduction of a significant amount of new vegetation, trees and shade systems to alleviate the urban microclimate and create a more welcoming environment.
- Connectivity: A physical and visual connection between the promenade and the adjacent Punta Margalla walkway, creating a cohesive shoreline.
- Functionality: Adapting the space to meet the needs of recreation, sports, and retail and services in an orderly and aesthetically pleasing manner.
Two-level promenade structure
One of the most innovative elements of the project is the concept of a promenade with two levels that seamlessly intertwine, taking advantage of the natural terrain.
- Upper (Urban) Level: It is located at the height of the current sidewalks next to the buildings. It will be a wide, representative walkway of mineral (stone) character. This is where urban life will be concentrated - restaurant terraces, entrances to retail establishments and rest areas. This level will also allow limited vehicle traffic (only access to garages and emergency and municipal service vehicles).
- Lower Level (Natural): Made of lighter materials, with a wood-like appearance, it is intended to provide a gentle transition between the city and the sand of the beach. It will be an undulating path winding among newly designed greenery, offering a more intimate contact with the sea.
Between these levels, a system of terraces and slopes planted with a variety of vegetation was designed, which not only enriches the visual qualities, but also allows for natural leveling of height differences.
Infrastructure for residents and tourists
The new Playa de los Locos will not just be a walking area. The project envisions the installation of modern urban equipment to encourage year-round activities:
- Playgrounds: Three modern children's playgrounds will be built, integrated into the environment.
- Biosaludables: Special areas with outdoor exercise equipment dedicated to people who care about physical fitness.
- Unified aesthetics: The food service sector will receive a consistent visual framework for its terraces, eliminating visual chaos and raising the aesthetic standard of the entire waterfront.
- Modular facilities: On the beach itself, there will be demountable, lightweight structures that serve as sanitary facilities and first aid stations, ensuring safety without permanent interference with the beach ecosystem.
Sustainability and adaptation
The project has undergone rigorous environmental analysis, adhering to coastal protection and water management guidelines. An important aspect is the introduction of efficient irrigation systems for the new vegetation and the use of materials that are durable and resistant to harsh marine conditions (salt, moisture, sun).
The goal of this intervention is to create a space that is "more welcoming and humane." By eliminating the dominance of cars in favor of greenery and pedestrian spaces, Torrevieja aims to improve the quality of life of its residents and strengthen its position as a modern coastal center that can combine its tourist tradition with the demands of ecology and modern urbanism.
