New urban park in Torrevieja: More than 30,000 square meters of nature, recreation and exceptional views
**The nearly €12 million project will change the face of the Alto de la Casilla area, offering residents and tourists a modern space overlooking the salt lagoons and the Mediterranean Sea
Torrevieja's mayor, Eduardo Dolón, along with Parks and Gardens Councilor Concha Sala and city architect Antonio Nieto, unveiled the design for the new Alto de la Casilla Municipal Park this morning. The development is set to become one of the highlights of the city's green spaces, combining vast space with a rich recreational offer for people of all ages.
Key investment data:
- Area: over 30,000 m²
- Investment: €11,920,210
- Timeline: 8 months
- Expected completion: February/March 2027
The mayor said that following today's approval of the project by the Local Executive Council, a tender will be issued within 15 days. If the schedule is maintained, construction work will start as early as May of this year.
Open space, accessible and integrated into the landscape
The project will create a fully accessible park that will be an extension of the region's natural landscape. The main traffic axis will make it easy to move around the site, and numerous shaded zones will allow for comfortable relaxation even on hot days.
The park will include:
- a picnic area surrounded by trees.
- the Panoramic Viewpoint, from which you will be able to admire the pink lagoon (Laguna Salada de Torrevieja), La Mata lagoon and the Mediterranean Sea.
- a Modern Café integrated into the environment, capable of accommodating 170 people.
- Parking for nearly 90 spaces and a dedicated bicycle zone.
Green lungs of the city: more than 500 trees and aromatic vegetation
The landscape design places a strong emphasis on sustainability. It was planned to plant 537 trees, including pines, cypresses, araucaria and yakarandas. The vegetation was selected to have low water consumption.
In addition, an area of 10,000 m² will be planted with more than 12,000 shrubs (including hibiscus) and 1,500 aromatic plants such as lavender, rosemary and thyme. Completing the whole will be 5,000 sq m of carefully maintained lawns.
Thematic playgrounds: "Pink Lagoon" and "Sea World"
One of the highlights of Alto de la Casilla will be its offerings for the youngest. The park will feature two large play zones, capable of accommodating a total of 400 children:
- Rosa Lagoon (Pink Lagoon): Inspired by local salinas. It will feature "Salt Towers," "Mining Wagons" and slides shaped like salt particles.
- Mundo Náutico (Sea World): It pays homage to Torrevieja's maritime tradition. The main attraction will be an impressive lighthouse over 13.5 meters high, as well as a replica ship and shark figure.
The playgrounds are designed as safe, open spaces that allow parents to easily care for their children while offering plenty of shade and places to rest.
Summary
The new Alto de la Casilla Municipal Park is not only an investment in infrastructure, but more importantly in the quality of life of residents. By combining modern architecture with respect for nature, Torrevieja will gain a unique meeting place that will become a new tourist and recreational symbol of the municipality.
