Torrevieja Symphony's thrilling musical journey: guest conductor maestro Leonardo Martinez

Culture/Febuary 25, 2025

Two outstanding works constituted the program of the third subscription symphony concert held at the Auditorio Internacional, performed by the Torrevieja Symphony Orchestra. An undoubted highlight for the orchestra's musicians, as well as for music lovers of OST concerts, was the performance of hospitable conductor - maestro Leonardo Martinez - an artist with extensive international experience, winner of conducting competitions, director of orchestras and educator. Torrevieja audiences were treated to two musical gems that, due to their unique charm, melodiousness and emotionality, gained great acceptance among performers and music lovers.

The celebrated, charmingly light Haffner Symphony, composed in 1783 by W.A. Mozart opened the evening. Among the most beautiful classical symphonies by the “Genius of Vienna,” it is extremely melodic, and its sound is delightful in its richness and cohesiveness. The symphony, as a typical classical work, is constructed w/ the norms that are accepted and practically still in force today, and so the four-movement composition exudes diverse emotions and character. El maestro Leonardo Martinez and the OST already demonstrated the typical stylistics and sound texture of the work in the first movement, then moving on to the second movement (Andante), representing a moment of poetic reverie and thoughtfulness. The beautiful Minuet, of the third movement, is music full of life and elegance, and the Finale (Presto) breathes lightness and finesse of sound, creating an atmosphere of exceptional optimism. Under the baton of Director Martinez, the musicians of the Torrevieja Symphony Orchestra responded with enthusiasm and empathy, creating a truly charming, fresh, graceful, delicate and solemn sound package.

In the second part of the concert, the Sinfónica de Torrevieja, conducted by Leonardo Martinez, impressed with a superb performance of Symphony No. 8 Op. 88, composed in 1889 by Czech Romantic Antonin Dvořák, whose work, along with the famous Symphony “From the New World,” is among the most frequently performed on philharmonic stages. Like Mozart's symphony, Dvořák's “Eighth” is built from four contrasting movements, and the sound material is a combination of Czech folklore and the traditional solemnity of a classical symphony.

The orchestra's interpretation and performance of the Symphony, under the baton of maestro Martinez, cannot fail to impress. The brilliantly disposed OST, demonstrated a huge range of diverse musical emotions, from a pastoral country scene, through a lyrical meditation and a slightly dance-like intermezzo, to an energetic solemn finale. From the very first bars of the work, it was clear that this was going to be an extremely dynamic performance, full of energetic accents and color variety. Maestro Martinez set aside the role of the automatic metronome, showing tremendous musicianship while interpreting all the nuances and musical details of the work. The orchestra responded to the conductor's expressive gestures with extraordinary attentiveness and, as an “instrument,” succeeded in responding with exceptional alertness, while demonstrating the romantic aesthetics of the sounds, and the joy of making music together. As an encore, we heard, performed with real verve, A. Dvorak's “Slavic Dance.” Hearty congratulations to maestro Leonardo Martinez and the Torrevieja Symphony Orchestra, because for music lovers it was a simply extraordinary evening.
