Health Ministry invests €2.6 million in express expansion of Torrevieja hospital using industrial modules

Torrevieja/

Regional Ministry relies on prefabricated structures to relieve the burden on key areas such as Rehabilitation and Pharmacy, speeding up lead times compared to traditional construction

The Valencia Regional Ministry of Health (Conselleria de Sanidad) has taken a decisive step to relieve pressure on medical care in the Torrevieja Health Department. With a confirmed investment of €2.6 million, the regional administration will expand the facilities of the Torrevieja University Hospital, using an industrial construction model (high-quality prefabricated modules) for key services.

The strategy is designed to respond quickly to growing demand in the Vega Baja region, allowing the resort to increase its floor space without the long lead times required by traditional masonry construction.

Strategic expansion in the eastern direction

The master plan for these improvements places the new facilities in a zone prepared for east of the Main Building. The goal is clear: to move services that generate a lot of outpatient traffic out of the main core of the hospital, thus freeing up space in the Main Building for inpatient and critical care areas.

The measure joins modules already in place to strengthen Primary Health Care and Pharmaceutical Management, consolidating a "ring" of external services to improve patient flow.

Investment Details: Rehabilitation and Pharmacy

Most of the investment is for two areas that have seen exponential growth in users after the hospital returned to public management:

  • New Rehabilitation Complex (€1 million): A large-scale prefabricated module will be erected exclusively for patient rehabilitation. Moving this service out of the main building will facilitate access for people with limited mobility (who will not have to traverse long hospital corridors) and allow the installation of more modern and spacious gymnasiums and therapy rooms.
  • Pharmacy Outside Consultation (~500,000 euros): This module, already under tender, is designed for Pharmaceutical Care for Outside Patients (those who only go to the hospital to pick up medications). This installation is key to reducing queues in the main lobby and providing more private and faster service to chronically ill patients.

Industrial construction: speed and efficiency

The choice of prefabricated modules is no accident. In the current health context, where the goal is "zero delay," industrial construction offers undeniable advantages:

  • Speed of implementation: While a traditional expansion could take years, modules can be operational in a matter of months.
  • Versatility: These structures allow spaces to be reconfigured or expanded in the future if demand continues to grow.
  • Lower impact: The installation generates less noise and debris, minimally interfering with the daily lives of hospitalized patients.

Comprehensive plan to strengthen the Department

These works are not isolated cases, but are part of a broader roadmap laid out by the Generalitat Valenciana (Valencia Government) to consolidate the public system in Torrevieja after the private concession ends.

The new modules complement other recent investments at the facility, such as increasing the number of beds in the wards and the technological and spatial renovation of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). With this move, the Health Service intends to quell criticism of service saturation and effectively respond to the needs of the incoming population, which multiplies during holiday periods.

The expansion of the Torrevieja Hospital, therefore, marks the beginning of a new phase in which the sanitary infrastructure is trying to adapt to the pace of demographic growth on the Alicante coast.
