New Port of Torrevieja: Countdown to grand opening of "Paseo del Mar"
After months of waiting, rescheduling and massive construction work, the heart of Torrevieja is changing its face. The investment worth more than 50 million euros, known as the Paseo del Mar project, is now in its final stretch. For residents, it's the news they've been waiting for: the port is no longer a construction site and is becoming a new center of social life.
When is the official opening?
The most important question is: when? According to Mayor Eduardo Dolón's official confirmation on March 17, 2026, the commercial and recreational zone is scheduled to open in April/May 2026.
Although originally hoping for an Easter deadline, delays in city work on access infrastructure have pushed back the date by several weeks. Currently, work is underway at the port site seven days a week, including weekends, in time for the start of the summer season. The developer assures that this is the deadline.
What will we find in the new port?
The project is not just a "refresh" of the waterfront, it's a completely new space of more than 20,000 sq m. Here's what exactly will be built there:
- Catering (27 units): Modern, two-story buildings with glass terraces will host well-known brands and local restaurants. Confirmed chains include McDonald's, KFC, Foster's Hollywood, Saona, VIPS and La Tagliatella.
- Entertainment: Finally, a movie theater is returning to the center of Torrevieja! A state-of-the-art multiplex with 4 movie theaters and an American-style professional bowling alley is being built there.
- "Hippies" Zone and Merry-Go-Round: The iconic craft market is returning in a new guise - to sleek white houses. There are also plans to bring the amusement park back to the newly paved plaza in June.
- Underground Parking: crucial for the convenience of residents. The 600-space parking lot is already partially operational and will greatly facilitate parking in the center, which has been Torrevieja's "nightmare" until now.
Architecture and accessibility
What will make the biggest difference to the living experience is the 230-meter-long footbridge (pasarela). It will connect the upper part of the breakwater (Dique de Levante) directly to the new recreational area and the Juan Aparicio promenade. This will allow strollers to walk seamlessly from the port all the way to the area around the "man of the sea" (Hombre del Mar) without having to wrench between cars.
How much did it cost?
Although the initial estimate was €20 million, the final investment cost exceeded €50 million. This is the result of the expansion of the work to include modern electrification of the entire port, smart LED lighting, large-format information screens, and the revitalization of historic elements related to salt transportation.
Voice of the Editor: For the Polish community in Torrevieja, this investment means not only new jobs and entertainment, but most importantly an increase in property values in the center and around Playa del Acequión. Torrevieja ceases to be a "bedroom community of Alicante" and becomes a modern resort of European standards.
