Ministry of Transport introduces innovative traffic regulation system at Punta Prima traffic circle
The General Directorate of National Roads, operating under the auspices of the Ministry of Transportation, has announced a tender for the implementation of a pioneering traffic regulation system at the Punta Prima traffic circle on the N-332 road. The project involves the installation of a traffic signal system that will be managed using machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI) techniques. The goal is to optimize real-time traffic management, adapted to current traffic conditions and the needs of this busy route, especially during the summer, when traffic volumes increase significantly.
European innovative project
As the tender documents show, there is no comprehensive solution on the market that simultaneously combines techniques of machine learning, artificial intelligence, neural networks, big data analytics, traffic modeling and traditional traffic engineering analytics. For this reason, the tender is being carried out in cooperation between the General Directorate of National Roads and the Undersecretariat for Sustainable Development and Innovation.
System Components
The proposed solution is to combine:
- Big Data Analytics - for processing and analyzing traffic data.
- Digitization of infrastructure and mobile needs - using machine learning, computer vision and artificial intelligence techniques.
- Modeling and traffic simulations - to predict and optimize vehicle flow.
The main goal of the project is the intelligent operation of road infrastructure, which will not only optimize its use and reduce maintenance costs, but also improve the overall efficiency of the transportation system.
Budget and implementation schedule
The total cost of the project is 495,970.69 euros (including VAT), and the duration of the work is scheduled for 10 months from the signing of the contract. Companies interested in participating in the tender can submit bids until February 27, 2025. This means that the system could become a reality in early 2026.
Benefits for road users
Implementation of the system will help improve safety and traffic flow on one of the most congested sections of the N-332 road. Modern technology will allow dynamic traffic management, minimizing traffic jams and reducing waiting times at traffic circles.
The project is another step toward the digital transformation of Spain's road infrastructure, putting the country among the leaders in transportation innovation.
